About Makita's 18V LXT Lithium-Ion Cordless Tool Series
As one of the pioneers driving the cordless tool revolution, Makita changed the game with its breakthrough 18V LXT Lithium-Ion Cordless Series. Three years after its debut, Makita's LXT Series has grown from seven to over 35 tools, providing a wide range of cordless solutions for professional tradesmen. Makita also added 18V Compact Lithium-Ion for cordless power in a more compact size. Makita's 18V Lithium-Ion batteries and ENERGY STAR rated Optimum Charging System provide several benefits over old battery technology. When compared to traditional 18V Ni-Cd batteries, Makita's 18V Lithium-Ion batteries have 40% less weight, longer run time, and five-times lower self-discharge to keep cells active and ready to use at any time.

Makita's 18V Lithium-Ion battery delivers 2,000 cycles -- 2.5X more than Ni-Cd. In addition, built-in shock absorbing features help protect the battery, and sixteen firm-holding contact terminals deliver constant high power. During the charging process, a built-in memory chip in the battery communicates with the Optimum Charger for a more efficient charge, extending the battery life. Makita's Optimum Charger is also faster: it will charge an 18V LXT Lithium-Ion battery in just 30 minutes, and an 18V Compact Lithium-Ion battery in only 15 minutes. Makita also offers a Rapid Automotive Charger for 18V LXT and 18V Compact Lithium-Ion batteries that plugs into 12V DC sockets equipped in most automobiles and trucks for added mobility. Makita's growing line of LXT cordless tool solutions features a wide range of industrial-quality power tools, including driver-drills, impact drivers, impact wrenches, saws, grinders, screwguns, rotary hammers, and more. The LXT Series also offers a jobsite radio, rechargeable flashlights, and several different combo kits.

Get rid of the excuses to improve your house...

    Review Date: May 27, 2009
    Reviewer: V. Lopez, Tex, Texas
I wanted to get a good set of cordless tools for about under a year. I figured there are so many little side project around my house, one of my biggest deterents is set up, making sure the extension cord is long enought or sometimes requireing two, finding the right plug; then there is the packing up. In all the time it would take me to set up my work station, I'd talk myself out of doing my side projects.

I had settled on the Makita combo set or the Milwakee 28V. I hear great things about Milwakee, plus my dad corded Milwakee sawzall has been going strong for over 15 years.

But, this was the kicker for me in my decision making. I got more tools from this 18V set than I would the Milwakee 28V set. If I needed more power, then I could just get the corded tools which I happen to have. i.e. this hammer drill could not drive a screw through some old wood, I could neither back out the screw or drive it in. So, I brought in my Corded Porter Cable screw gun, and it drove the screw no problem at all. I know I could have drilled a bigger pilot hole, but needless to say, by that time, the screw was stuck.

The set from what I found cannot replace your corded tools power... But, that is if you have a good set of corded tools already. If you need max power in a battery pack, you should do more research on the 28V tools.

    Quick run down of tools:
    1) flashlight... Tremendously bright. Will light up a room even if you have it on the ground.

    2) Sawzall... Tooless blade change is great. Has quite a bit of power. You could have endless uses for this sawzall even if it isn't construction handy work. I could see situations where I can trim 5" tree limbs with the right blade, no cables to cause dangers.

    3) Circualr saw, cuts 2X4's well. I was able to cut several plywoods as well. Of course I'm not contractor so I'm not going to drain the battery with my small use of it.

    4) Impact drill will screw a screw in with authority - the screw will be pipping hot when you take it out. I tried using this to remove the above mention screw, but the hammering action was eating the head of the screw.

    5) Grinder, I haven't worked with it, but seems to give a good kick when you push the trigger.

    6) Hammer drill... I had problems with utilizing as a screw gun. But the drill works quite well. The Hammer drill option works good as well.

    7) Portable radio... works well. But, I find you have to move it around in order to get optimal reception. When I put it in certain places, the static will be bad, but if I move it around, I can put it where the reception is crystal clear. The MP3 plug is a good option, but the "SOUND IS LOW" in comparison to the normal radio option. You won't have to squint your ear to hear, but you will notice the difference.

Side note, you get all or nothing power, which is good. When the battery runs out, the tool just will not work. But you will get power up until the power drains enough not to operate the tools.

    Great Package

Great combination for the price. I'm a landlord with 16 apt to fix and maintain. I did a lot of research before settling on this combo. I've been using them for about 3 weeks now and they're great. The circular saw is light and powerful, the impact drill is amazing, I used the grinder to cut tiles and it works great. Some of the other reviews mentioned poor packaging, mine came very well packed with packing material all around. Maybe amazon got the message and improved it. This combo is great for starters or even veteran professionals. I definitely recommend it.
Updated Review for LXT702 18v Kit

    Review Date: December 3, 2008
    Reviewer: Donovan M. Allen,
I just ordered this makita set from amazon after doing extensive research. The LXT601 is the same set as this except for the jobsite radio is included in the LXT702. The LXT702 set is cheaper for some reason so I would recommend that you buy it if you are looking to buy the LXT601. I havent received the kit yet so I cannot comment on the quality. I have owned other makita cordless tools in the past and i can tell you that they have all been of superior quality. I will update this after receiving the kit.

    Update: 1/17/10

After using the tools for metal fabrication work for the past 6 months or so, I have come away very impressed overall.

The drill:Plenty of torque in low range, plenty of speed in high range. Hammer drill works fine for drilling in concrete.

The circular saw: cuts 2x lumber easily and accurately. Great for smaller projects.

The reciprocating saw: Works great for all but the biggest jobs. Seems to have plenty of power for everything that you could ever want to use it for.

The angle grinder: Works fine for light duty grinding, but under load this one tends to eat up the battery pretty quick. Still, this thing is great for small out of the way jobs.

The impact driver: Makes driving 3" screws fun quick and easy. Very small, compact and powerful. If you drive alot of screws, you will wonder how you lived without this thing...

The Stereo: Suprisingly powerful bass! This has proven to be one of my favorite aspects of this tool set.

The flashlight: Does what a flashlight is supposed to do...I would have rather had the flourescent style light...

Overall this set has met or exceeded my initial high expectations and I would not hesitate to recomend this or any other makita tool set to anyone!
    Great Tools... Bad Bag

Buying these Makita tools from Amazon are a great value and are top quality but upon reciving my order I found that my contractor bag was ripped and the zipper was broken. After weeks of playing pass the buck with Makita customer service, Amazon decided to replace the whole unit to make it right. Although replacing the bag alone would have been far more simple and efficient and the cost of shipping the whole unit back and forth would much more than the retail cost of the bag alone. But of course that would be too easy and cheap so here i go packing and sending back my tools. GO FIGURE!
    Can't beat it

    Reviewer: Josh,
Let me start by saying that yes, the packaging is horrible. It ships in the factory box, which gets all beat up. Check the contents upon delivery. I used the free super-saver shipping, and it went fed-ex and took only a day. I checked the contents and everything appeared to be OK, despite being shifted around and jostled. The tools are GREAT. I have nothing bad to say about them (aside from the flashlight, which should use LED technology instead of incandescent). The circular saw works great (i just wish the blade was on the right instead of the left). Battery life is as expected on a cordless tool, but with the 30 minute charge time it's not an issue. I have nothing bad to say about any of the other tools in the kit. The radio was really of no use to me and I already sold it on Ebay. Those little 3 1/2" speakers just can't pump out the volume needed on a big job site, so I'll stick with my Milwaukee radio there. I've already purchased additional tools and batteries, and have become a hardcore Makita fan! You can't beat Amazon's price on this set, either, so don't even try!
